It has been a long while. I had family over from Europe and real life got busy.

Today I want to talk bout two topics: wet palette and a painter named Jeremie Bonamant Teboul (http://www.jeremiebt.com).

Both are interconnected to me as he brought that type of palette to my attention. few years backI was looking for tips on painting to improve the quality of my models. I browser different websites and found a guy very active on various painting community. It was Jeremie, i visited his website where he advertised a project he started with few friends in the form of a book that gathered tips and knowledge they acquired over time. Sinece they were all awarded painter I ordered the book and this is were I read about the wet palette.

Essentially a wet palette is a wide cup not very deep with a towel soaked in water and a sheet of wax paper on the top. I won't go in the details of the physics behind this little DIY miracle but it hydrates your paint perfectly as the wax paper acts as a semi-permeable barrier and thus allowing little amount of water to filter through it and reach the paint.

Mine cost about 2 bucks. I recycled a flat spread cheese plastic box (being French I had to use a Boursin), bought a pack of spongy towel and a roll of wax paper in a dollar shop and done. See the pictures.

I find it handy when you paint a unit or an army to keep some of the dry wax paper as a footprint of your mix and color palette too. I always try new products and tile palette but inevitably I go back to the wet palette as it dilute my paint to this near perfect point, the milky 2% fat point! It is efficient, cheap and very ecological, hence the way to go!

Oh yeah! and you can close it to keep your paint fresh overnight. In a cool basement or a fridge.

Now let's go back to Jeremie. you may have heard of him recently as he was awarded the prestigious grand prize during Crystal Brush painting competition at Adepticon 2013 in Chicago, IL. Here is a little video by Wilt Chamberlain : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-z295YjbSqE.

Jeremie produced a DVD few years back and now he is back from 2 years of bike trip with a second DVD on wet blending (with wet palette which is much quicker than with dry retarder) and freehand.

Jeremie is a very easy going guy and it shows in its DVD. The main feeling I have when I watch them is that I can get rid of my complexes and fear to f*** my models up and just try new approaches. He shows his model at intermediate steps where it looks not great and shows you how to go back and forth, and even changes tones or light on the go. I do very much encourage you to get your hands on it even though he has an approach orientated to unique piece and diorama, you get a lot of ideas and tips for army painting too. The series on the Minotaur is amaz'balls!

You can find few teaser online and I think the best way in the US is through Cool mini or not website: http://www.coolminiornot.com/shop/dvds/painting-miniatures-with-jeremie-bonamant-teboul-volume-ii-painting-in-fresh-and-freehand.html.

I helped him for translation purposes but I have no financial interest in the DVD so my thoughts are genuine and honest. I also sent a copy to the Greg and Jen form the PAinting Tabled podcast so feel free to go and listen to their thoughts to compare.

That s it for today!.

A plus,

This week I am gonna post some picts I took of my WIP on my BSB for the WoC. Well I am not original in teh fact i went for a Tzeentch marked BSB. There will be hopefully two iterations: one on disk that I am gonna show you today and later one on deamonic mount (cheesier than chiz'it) that I will base on Archaon model.
Initailly when I got the new WoC lord in plastic, like some others, I thought he has a great BSB posture. i worked my kit bash around him. I was looking teh various version of teh disk that GW or orthers have produced over the year for about a month or two. I thought for a while to steal an idea I found on another blog (Rhellion post at The Magnificent Bastards) on mount him on a screamer. I really like teh disk for teh tzeench herald and i was tempted to buy the model but I could not find cheap. So for teh forst time I try to sculpt something. Usually I over-glorify my green stuff whole filling but not this time. I really tried to give some texture and shapes. The bases is two old flyer see-through bases and few bits and bobs from the my bits box. and here the result:

I am very happy with the result. I attempted to sculpted screaming faces on the top and give a direction to my disk using spike from tomb guards halberds and the blade of the halberd of the Chaos Lord. I also tried to shape flame running below the disk as if originating form the center. I use the base to give some height to the model without resort to the long plastic holder.
I was not sure initially of the idea to use the vortex beast back portal as a battle standard but it turn out very appropriate.
Finally I spent soem time making sure that the model was adequate for being push around during game and after few games I am glad to see that nothing got even remotely damaged or unsettled.

Alright, I would appreciate any feedback if you would spare few minutes of your time. I am looking forward to paint that BSB!!

Cheers,
I also came to accept teh fact i want to well structured posts and it is not gonna happen for few reasons: time and the way I tackle the hobby is more organic than well thought mostly.

I am gonna try to post more but shorter posts about what got me excited each week.

This week will be no surprise to mots of us: High Elves army book.

Why this book stand out for me? You love or hate Mat Ward but much to his credit he always try to bring new concepts rules based on the core system, the reign of chaos in the daemons book for instance. Well he did it again. The loremaster is the most exciting concept of the book to me; descent warrior with access to all signature spell of the 8 BRB lores. I also like that, much alike the loci in the daemons book, the heroes means something for the army or some units at least. Each one brings extra rules instead of just boosted statistic or access to magic. Finally that is the first book that gives an incentive to use rider for monster, fire phoenix gets a bonus to come back if they are ridden.

The cover is one of the best of the new template if not the best, definitely on part with the 40K daemons cover! Big thumbs up for the fluff section, unusually well build and organized. They pay a lot of attention
to details such as create an HE-centric time line based which in turn give an insight on HE society that restarts the calendar with each king.

The new units are all great models, yes even the phoenix. My favorite is the loremaster, it has a dragon ball taste to it! The shadow warrior/ Avelorn sister seems incredibly versatile. I like the tendency they have to provide extra heroes, the Lothern Skycutter lord seems a fine BSB in disguise.

Hi,

It has been a long while I posted anything. It has been fairly quiet TK-wise,
for 2 reasons. I recently learn that I am gonna be a dad. I freaking thrilled about it and it implies me reorganizing a lot of things including hobby-time. Second, I won a lucky on eBay auction and became the happy owner of a all new Warriors of Chaos army. Today I am gonna talk about why and what.

I play WFB for over 15 years. I owned every flavored of Undeads from 5th to 8th (though I mainly painted through 7th, as much I respect Cavatore works the predictable aspect of the game became dull mainly because I did not like the power builds). Undead remains my first love in the game, and to be fair it is Nagash aspect that attracted me especially in the early days of his reign in Khemri. When they split I collected vampire counts and frankly I dig the bloodlines of vampire (Necrarch and Strigoi mostly), then TK came out and I collected them ever since. In this edition I really like the work of Cruddace. I very much enjoy how the list have varieties, weaknesses and synergies. Now on the warriors of chaos side of the story, I was never really tempted because the model missed something to aesthetically appeal to me and were shy of distinctive personality compare to beastmen and deamons. But recently GW brought their A game as far as releases go. I started to get excited about what WoC could be when I saw the Marines of Chaos. I am no 40k enthusiast but I really liked that MoC got real spirit to them now and not only SM painted black. About teh same time I thought that the shrine, the cruchers and the hellstriders were sexy as f***. I heard podcasters trashing the shrine but I never met a player that did not like its uniqueness. The key element is that even before owning the book I have heard that Robin Cruddace was the main author. Finally I won a massive auction for new in box WoC lot with most of the new toys and a batallion. At that point i was lost!

I decided to organize my buy after the initial one based on few big pieces I already owned an dcouple of model I really wanted to paint. I was never atrractyed to teh army as a whole but I have few models i really wanted to paint like everybody and most of thoses were not GW. So here it goes:
nothing like GW

Lord:

Winged Nurgle prince daemon, aka Gluttony – Fantasy, LEGENDARY size from Raging Heroes

Besides supporting a French company (Cocorico!) the model is just spot on and what I imagine a Nurgle powerful leader shall be! I assemble it by now (soon there will be pictures) and comes together easily. Rougly $65 from there website with shipping and well worth it!

Now if you play WoC you need spare Daemon Princes: I don't like GW one at teh very excpetion of Bel'akor, which is just perfect for undivided prince (make sense since he was) but nowadays you cannot have non aligned prince, plus spare princes do not come with wings. I have in my collection a Kifaro from Studio McVey whihc looks like a rhinoceros humanoid and Minotaure from Figone which is well a mino but bros and very much so deamonic to me so here you go I have two spare so far and I am thinking of Bel'akor!

Chaos Lord... nothing planned so far and I think I will consider it only if princes really do not work as leader. In my mind daemonhood is the ultimate goal of all chaos followers so I want my general to be an achiever! and in truth painting-wise I am looking for central piece as the TK lack of it somewhat. I know there are sphinxes and Casket but you cannot go wild with color if you want your army to tie well (unless you are Mr "awesome" Wapel, but he is more of magician to me!)

Heroes:

BSB - well I will make two of them both Tzeentch .... at the point you can see I am not only paint driven. BUt that BSB is too good to pass and I have no BSB in TK so I am looking forward to try big banner freehand. One will be on disk and will be based on the new lord model on a disk (I like the one of teh tzeentch herald in finecast but we will see if I can get one). I saw Rhellion blog using similar concept, and i makes sense cause tis mode lend itself to it I think. I want my second one to be on deamonic mount and I will use Archaon for base. I never intend to play the big man; I am not big knights of chaos in my army. The model are sweet but much better options are in the list.

One Nurgle wizard Lvl2 - based on a kit-bash that happened during a games day in Chicago in 2010. This model is good memory and now I can use it.

Core:

12 Tzeentch warriors - I hav eth model from the batallion, don't plan to get more so at 12 strong hw/shld marked with Tzeentch seems a usable otption.... plus I toy with the idea to us eteh model of Vilitch a Tzeentch sorcerer and he would need a possy like all respectable sorcerer

5 dogs twice... 30 pts it is bargain.

5 forsaken twice, I think Slaannesh. Got the box in the lot and they are not so bad... very customizable but sadly very static. To be fair I assemble them with different alignment: you don't have really enough to build 10 from the same god.

1 new chariot (I think it is gonna end up Khorne) and one based on dark elf chariot marked with Slaannesh ( I used old mount of Slaanesh)

But on the long run I want a small block of Nurgle warrior (17ish + a character) and for those i went the road of alternative brand and when looking around one choice stood out: Corrupters of the Apocalypse of Avatar of War. Roughly same price than GW standard warrior plus shipping fees and you have unarguably the nicest sculpt currently available for Nurgle Warrior/Chosen)

Special

Well here I have to paint a unit of Dragon Ogre, I dig the new GW model and I am thinking 2 hand weapons.

I have to make a spot for my Chimeara from late Banelegions, recently Mierce miniatures line (see previous posting).

One Gorebeast chariot

5 Hellstriders

Later state of the army will see 2 5 units of chosen and a shrine! So far no plan for trolls/Throgg or ogres.

Rare:

Big vortex beasty! I assembled the big boy so I can play both as the vortex and the back sword are easily swapable and I magnetized the faces. I also have a Banelegion/Mierce mutant called conjunct XIII; I was thinking to use it as a vortex beast or spinned chaos spawn from monstruous arcanum!

Cruchers, models are great and rules well rules... what s not to like! Moreover it is a compensation mechanism for my TK snakes!

In the long term I plan to turn a Maulerfiend or Soul Grinder a into a Hellcanon (not big on the model) if planning tournaments. Skills!

So overall I need to make a spawn in case of random generation event, but I have enough for two style of army: fast MSU (chariot, Dragon ogre, cruchers, flyers) and slower MMU (blocks with shrine).

Soon I will post picture of the assembly line and first painted unit!

Cheers!

Hey! Hello.
Hearing that R has finished his Tomb Kings has inspired me to take some photos of my Ogres. These brutes are nearly complete, I just have a solid chunk of highlights/details to drum up across the board.

I'm pleased with the outcome, all of that bare flesh really forced me out of my comfort zone (read: Devlan Mud, rinse/repeat.) I even made up some cool tokens as Maw-lore-attribute-helpers.

My greenstuff skills are still formative, but without the high contrast lighting and held at arm's length he looks pretty solid.

Maneaters are my favorite option in the army book. So customizable! They work as a perfect all-purpose unit. I prefer Immune to Psychology and Vanguard or Stubborn.

Really happy with my Sabretusks- simple to paint up. Eventually I want a full unit of 5 with an accompanying Hunter.

I will never paint another Mournfang. Hell, these aren't even complete and I've had enough. The models are awesome, but the fur doesn't come out right for me no matter what I try to do. Just don't inspect them too closely and I'll be alright.

Let me know what you think!

The first post of the year will be about the last unit of my Tomb King army I just finished yesterday... well I still have have to paint the movement tray and to magnetize the chariot bases. So yes it'll be about Chariots!

It will also be a longer post as I don;t update the blog so often so it will make me feel less guilty about that but not only. I want my take on the Tomb King to be out there on the web. It sounds arrogant but it isn't. I listen to most podcasts related even remotely to WFB and on one hand I have to say a fair bit of them have some solid practice with this army but I can agree really with none of them on the strengths and weaknesses of the current book. According to me it highlight mostly the versatility of this second version of the book. So i decided that when I post a new finished unit I will also develop how I make use of it on the field and I just happen to finish a core unit so i will even start in order.

I. The hobby side.

Unit of 4 chariots. Without further ado here come the bad boys:

On the left you have two closer look at the unit champion and on the left side same for the standard bearer.

The paint job is classic and fit the rest of the army. I may add some more ink job on the base later on to unify the army. having a big base size army is a blessing for the model count but keeping the basing on very much the same exact shade is harder than I anticipated. I find small patch of ink helps to tie up the various models by mimicking imperfection of the ground, plus it add some depth to your model almost effortlessly.

II. Gaming side

Pro:

- core choice, no way otherwise player would consider them

- can take magical banner up to 25 points

- D6 impact hits

- charioteers have 2 A each

- easy to raise back (1d3 +1)

- T4 model with 3 Wounds

- do not suffer really from Nehekaran Undead special rules as no chariot can march.

- 2 sneaky shots that hits on 5 with 24" range

Cons:

- not really suited for delivering characters because they won't provide look out sir except if you invest over 300 pts or more

- do not survive attrition, hordes, and or cavalry bus

- NEED the charge

Unit size I used the most: 3-4 with no characters or champion but with at the very least musician and standard bearer if room for its points.

I don't play anymore big chariots buses. It may be my play style but they never give their points back nor survive the battle. I find large unit hard to maneuver and so difficult to get the charge. The inability to have support attacks hit hard this formation, and the +1 S for impact hit per rank f three or more chariots is not enough of an incentive.

I think 2 units potentially dealing 4D6 strengh 4 is better than one potential 4D6 strength 5. In the same idea, a front exceeding 5 chariots is a waste of points as they will never make contact during charge so will no provide you impact hits.

Chariots are ideal for focusing the opponent army and distract him from the real threats of your army. You could consider them as expensive chaff but it is narrowing down their use. They have a real psycho impact on your opponent, I have only face opponents that over-estimate or under-estimate them. Their real fighting ability comes from the impact hits and the defensive abilities comes form the T4 and possibility to raise them easily and repeatedly. Bare in mind that baiting for TK means trading as we cannot flee; chariots are mobile enough to be sacrificed to give you a flank to the Snakes. I almost never double charge with them and a sphinx or snakes because a smart opponent will get the wound on them and that will negate the hitting power of my heavy unit. They usually wait on the flank for opportunities. They are good at taking small monstruous cav or negate the charging bonus of heavy human knights. The latter especially if you get the killing blow spell off. They are also useful every turn of the game as they can shoot; granted they are not snipers but good enough to clear small scouts such as skinks or single characters.

Characters: No thank you! Way to snipable. You need 5 rank-and-file models to have a "look out sir!" (LoS) excluding the champion. It would bring the unit beyond the optimum size according to me for a net bonus very mild as WS 5 or 6 won't make this unit a killing machine at all and potential extra bonus stretgh on impact hit.

Special Characters: There is two special characters that can ride a chariot, so there are two scenarios here. Interestingly enough both have huge chariots and that is important to keep on mind for foot print and how to make the best of it.

First Settra, I tried him few games as I was looking for a way to use my Ushabti. It did not work but I found the games pleasant anyway and he potentiates well Snake Riders. I surround him with a unit of 7 chariots with full command with the banner that grants +1 M. I chose a front of 3 chariots, so my front was solely composed of Settra and the champion, nobody could hit the unit from the front and I have LoS for Settra. The idea is to lock a unit by charging with carrion or scorpion in the flank and then charge the front with Settra unit.

Second is Arkhan and the opposite somewhat. He is ok in a fight but that is not is strong suit. I used him more extensively than Settra for the sake to run a "Death" army, that is to maximize the Ld hexes and the insane amount of Ld based tests leading to wounds or flee that TK can generate. We may not be teh best at that role but we are in the top 3 with this type of army. So here I take again 7 chariots full command, the banner may vary a bit here but I like my chariots to be mobile so I often go +1 M. The front rank is composed of my command and Arkhan sit in the second rank casting mayhem. I usually equip him with non-flying chariot as it is almost the price of a chariot. Do not be afraid to end up in hand-to-hand with Arkhan try to place him in contact with rank-and-file so his weapon brings back wounds on chariots. Do not forget that Arkhan is a TK so his WS carry over teh unit, WS4 is better than WS3.

Conclusion: Two units of 3 chariots with musician is usually my first choice in a list. They are crazy versatile from clearing the chaff to give an edge in flank charge with infantry or hunt war machines. I only consider big unit to accompany special characters. They are very much the spirit of the army so comes from your core. Honestly what's not to like about them. They are always chariots in my lists.

Questions and comments are all very welcome.

I can't really figure out why as it is not overly complicated when you don't go for intricate scenery.

I always found excuse not to own what I need to really try something. The truth of it is that I could not be further away from truth. Basing seems a very organic process (at least to me). I have bits accumulated from various armies and ranges, I have few tree splinters and sands and pebble on the top of the mud I have few element of fake vegetation acquired in a aquarium store. I have everything I need.

When I overcame my fear to assemble the Chimaera from Banelegion. I stopped for a minute and felt bad to even consider mounting it on a sanded base. It felt really wrong to spend so much time, money and energy in that marvelous model and not really giving a try to be the best model I have ever done so far.

I spent about an hour (really not that much when you think of it) and came up with this:

I want my base to tell a simple story. I plan on using this chimaera in games and the only use with army i played is during Storm of Magic game when using a Truthsayer. This caster has automatic access to Transformation of Kadon, and here come my Mountain Chimaera.

Essentially I was looking for a small area near a ruined temple. I included the two bump on teh ground to fit the wings of the landing beast (i think it is badass)

Other than that The model itself was reasonably painless to assemble (especially given the sheer size of it) and when I think of it it hurts all the most that this amazing company bankrupted last month. I don't own much of Forge world piece but let me tell you that Banelegion models are the best I ever toyed with. They are complex at the look but very very well thought to be assembled with little gaps to fill and packaged very well.

Now that I am pumped with this first attempt I will do similar thing with the tentacle-croco beast, prime both in white and start to document the shit out of mother Nature big badass predator and paint these fantastic model and trying hard to pay them the respect they deserve.

Final shot of the Chimaera as it is at the moment:

What's up fellow nerd!?

Getting ready for the next Jakson's nerdgasm? I know I am.

I havn't had the time to play much lately, something about real life taking over hobby time.

I played 1 more game of SoM though. I did not try the warpfire dragon lvl 1 though as I mentioned in a previous post but I used a Truth Sayer that I proxied with the Alkemy Khaliman Republic: Iëcha Bint Sorhna, Keeper o/t Snow from Kraken ed. ( see here). I think it fits well and it is the only way for me to have access to Transformation of Kadon and to turn into a Mountain Chimera and use the awesome model of Banelegion.

I am preparing a post on the progress of this model.

But without further ado here is what I painted recently besides my progress on my TK army.

I got married in the meanwhile and ... well i got lazy a bit!

I have painted a little bit in the process and I will update the blog to catch up with the progress.

But for today I 'd like to talk about Storm of magic and Monstruous Arcanum. I just dead love it. I have heard all the points about being less strategic and bigger swings between turn and so on... But I love putting models on the table I don't get to use in standard 8th ed., and 8th is already way more flexible than 6th and 7th. Along the year I enjoy the Hobby I acquired a wide collection: part of it is "organized" and can fit in one or two armies, but part of it is random well that is model I wanted to paint badly. Additionally I Love teh plastic towers GW make and they do awesome fulcra....

A friend of mine and I were thinking about ways to include more monsters in 8th without going for teh scroll of bindings a snot all monster has to be accessible to all army. WFB is a game of monster and Giants for him, while it was more Dragons for me. So we build up a comp/campaign around that concept to make big beasty more survivable. From then on I was wondering what was the best Dragon so to speak, given certain context: standard game, SoM and scenario.

I compiled Monstruous Arcanum with SoM Book in the file I sent you. And few interesting observation came along. I initially started with a huge crush on the Shard Dragon, I think it ability to generate 4D6 +D3 attack on a charge (and potentially 5D6 if you wait the first wound to use the BW in combat) is gnarly. Plus it is teh only Dragon that can have access to a 5+ WS and 3+ WS against most magic spell.... and with the back ground it fits my Dwarf army and Hell I need an insantive to field them nowadays. Uber castled play style don't give for much funny game. He has the highest As with the Carmine Dragons but he has a funny trick if he passes a save. HE is one of teh toughtest of teh standar category, best protection and higher toughness. The down side is that he has only 6 Wds, so pretty much cannon ballable (5% chance on teh first turn per canon to be clear, well 4.8%)and he is not a Flyer!

Going through the file I quickly realized it is not that one sided and other Dragons can be useful. Here are few key observations:

1. Warpfire Dragons are the only one that have access to magic below Emperor lvl. So in Som context a Young Lvl 1 Warpfire Dragon is ace to hold fulcrum for slightly over 300 pts, plus the reptile is basically a small stone thrower. Bargain!

2. The generic Dragon are somewhat a let down. They are cheaper but the most interesting based on their BW are over classed by more specialized dragons. Carmine over rule Black, Magama Overrule Fire. That being said teh Forest is a of slight interest if you field WE and fight brets, that may be the only Emperor I would consider for fun in that context. The Strom Dragons are a joke, and a bad one. they have no Strentgh on their BW but do not deny AS. Ice Dragon are trickier and I feel their may use for them but I cannot yet figure out what. Over all I feel that teh specialized Dragon are worth more even if you pay extra.

3. Magma Dragon are absolute beast and truth be said it may the only Emperor Dragon I would consider in a game. Their extra T combined to the aura of Fire and teh fact it is largest monster (2D6 thunder stomp) makes me dreamy! and BW str10, well it just speaks for itself. When they say that a Dragon is an army onto himself: they talk about him.

4. Carmine are the swiftest and best basic protection (with the Shard D) at the expense of -1 WS/S and is very afordable. His BW is great but clearly not thought through for combat and that is my general problem with Monst. Arcan.; teh designer did not think much of BW use in combat.

5. Magic i not that useful for dragon besides the warpfire dragon lvl 1 in SoM. Otherwise Life is good for its attribute and a dwellers below is good agaonst the biggest threat of the canon. The ice dragon with Light can be funny but you need more than one lvl to get the ASF or I boost. To be fiar I dont know Dark Magic much. But overall I am not impressed by this option, for 20 pts mmmh maybe. I was also wondering: does being speel caster make then characters, hence challengeable? I know it does not for pink horrors.

6.The Toad Dragon is also a nice choice. I classified it as Standard size Dragon for comparison sakes. It comes on highest coast , but it is Collosal so it thinder stomp everything! High T and W 10. BW good.

7. I can see secnario of an emperor dragon vs. a small army! 700 pts each side or so!

In ccl: I would consider fielding the Shard Dragon in most games, The std Warpfire lvl 1 in storm of magic and the emperor magma in the biggest game. I can see use for the Carmine as well. And if you think about it you can see that they are teh toughest to kill or the chepest for what they give.

Thinking point investment, my top for each category are teh follow:

Young (~300 pts): well warfire lvl1
Standard (300-400): Shard no brainer
Great Dragon (~400): Magma (least interesting category to me! I'd prefer a tolled up Shard to be fair as it is much more survivable)
Emperor Dragon (~700): MAGMAAAAA!

Ok here are just fruits for thoughts. Let me know what s your side of the story.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13538642761090767377noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3192073208268903796.post-60813675858783791932012-06-18T20:42:00.001-07:002012-06-18T20:42:59.229-07:00Incoming Goodness Not that long ago I turned 31. I am lucky enough that my better half and my loving mama are not yet fully closed to the idea to feed my addiction at this occasion. And i got spoiled.

That was part of the reason I was reluctant to share that as I feel a bit bad about it. I know the price of these things and I could not afford them for a long while either. But I am playing/painting for 15 years and it is good for once not to have to hunt the unbeatable deal on eBay to get my polyvinyl fix.

Well part of the reason I could not hunt that on the net is also that maelstrom BaneBeasts and Warhammer Forge book are not mainstream either. And being so I had hard to find review on it. I overcome the shyness of the little spoiled bastard that I am and try to turn it into something useful: a review

I forgot to mentioned a McVey Studio Mini: Kifaro. To me, rhino inspires me raw primal power and their very little descent fantasy rhino themed model out there. I jumped on it, teh paint job of Mc EVy Studio is very inspiring and I will definitely consider to try revers shading (lighter inside and darker outside, see link above)

As for the book, well just amazing and it deserves a full review on its own. But as a first opinion, totally worth its money. Same vein that Tamurkhan. Illustration are seamless and very much inspiring for painting. The basilisk is just so fantastic with this yellow turquoise. I was considering getting the model instead of the Conjunct XIII from BaneBeast, but... I saw the Shard Dragon illustration and read its rules. suffice to say down the line I will get one. Can be in a year or two. No rush there. I really love the emphasis on the dragon race. WFB is a world of giants and dragons but we see none because of the possibility to kill them at once. Now this book offer you to add extra 25% point, so you can multiply targets... well yo can also agree with your oponent that any monster can take top D3 per wound in order to want top play them more and that s free! But let s face it the more monster on the table the merrier.

Finally I am the proud owner of two BaneBeasts: the Conjunct XIII and the Mountain Chimera (what!? oh yeah the Terror of Fortriu). And i could see myself becoming the father of more.

First the negative, Maelstrom is not GW or PP. They cast at slower pace. For the customer it means waiting 4-8 weeks to get your order. On the top of it the staff is nothing but perfectionist on the cast, which extend further the delay. But they get you way way more than you bargain for, so here come teh overwhelmly positive. I have never seen such crappy shipping box, packed with so much love inside: the models are very very well packed and protected. Their models are absolutely, positively, surprisingly much better and bigger than the picture let you think. Ok I know you have the measures on the website, but no measure can represent the bulk of a body or how a figurine fill the space on the base.

Their model are on the pricy side but the quality of the resin is beyond my expectation and frankly flawless. no bubble or miscast or flashes. The pieces clip perfectly and the choice to create the parts are done that if you really want not to green stuff the joint, it wont be obvious, The connection is most often in the recesses of a skin fold.

I realize now that final touch I have done on Melkhior do not stand out on the picture (push the red shades with purple and a bit more gore).

Here some other angle for Kemmler. Essentially the approach is the same: inks and very diluted paint on light color drybrushed model. there is a bit more variation in Kemmler and I think it is a pity. Despites the illustration I shall have kept a narrower palette. I really wanted to introduce greenish and black shades; but it is a fail. That being said teh model overall come nice so all in all I am happy.

I know it keeps me away from my TK, but that so refreshing!

Screaming Skull Catapult #1

So I try this bad boy with his unpainted twin today and I haave to say I am not convince. You have to build a very defensive list to make it fit in the army. It does not really fit my play style (like I have one... ha!).

Next come the casket of soul and I feel my paint job is an insult to this model and concept. I don't really knwo why I rushed to finish this model. It shall be an awesome center piece, but I have to say that TK player are spoiled we have a load of possible centerpieces... I will have to make it up with awesome Shpynxes.

Anyway Here you go

And to finish today I will show you the first batch of my skeletons. I went for lazy approach and mix of spear and hand weapon shield. I usually field them by 50 or 60 if they see the battlefield and the first rank indicate their current equipment for the battle. That may be shady, but s far no complain.

I am not a real fan boy even though I really appreciate the simple palette that is so characteristic to his influence on Warhammer Fantasy Battle imagery.

I have seen with more or less success over the internet hobbyist like I am trying to translate that into model painting. I thought it was a good way to close my WE to try it for myself

So here we go and as always please let me know what you think:

So it is not a finished job. I think I am gonna push a bit the gore color and deepen (if it i a word) the red tone using brown purple shade. But overall it came out alright.

It is out of the theme of my TK so it is refreshing. I have an entire batch of old and new VC character which I think will follow the same treatment. I am thinking of Kemmler especially maybe with more bluish and greenish tone.

Next post will be an update on my TK (SSC and CoS, which I am not proud of but hehe... it is done and it is in 95% of my list)

Cheers,
Da RoosterAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13538642761090767377noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3192073208268903796.post-35675704263329377332012-05-29T20:59:00.000-07:002012-05-29T20:59:22.446-07:00

What's up gang!

mmmh.. maybe I spent too much time painting listening to the Pointhammered Handsome boyz... but really is there such a thing as too much time spending listening to their sweet honey voices.

Well bottom line I painted a lot lately. One the project I have been working on is a Light Liche Wizard. I usually field one a support wizard (lvl 2) or even more recently as a lvl 3 or 4 also as a support but of Arkhan the black (so no Nehekara caster). I loved teh idea of Mark the Beastman from Bad Dice. I think his list is too optimize for teh game I play, but I liked that aspect of no Nehekara and Heavy Construct. Basically I tweaked his idea to make it my own version of it.

Anyway,The TK range is really good arccording to me so far you stay away from their casters. It took me a little while but I came up with the idea to use a 40K model from the Tau range. With very minor tweak (such as filling his frontal vagina with green stuff) and it was very suitable. I also like the idea of my casters controlling the sand element, so with some bits I kit-bashed a hand lifting him from the ground to stand out of the unit. Easy trick and nice effect. I find hard with all the scheme of my army to have my caracther really showing off. A pedestal of a sort is always a nice twist.

So here is the bad boy

I tried some wet layering... alright for a first trial but a lot of practice ahead if I want it to significantly differ from standard layering.

You can see the face is a bit "chalky"; I used an old GW white can to prime it and it came a bit sandy/chalky... but not so bad that I would have to scrap it.

And of course cause I am an uber nerd, i need to scene my new toy.

As usual, please let me know what you think.
Cheers,
Hi Everybody,

I haven't posted for a while. I moved to Baltimore, MD.

But the past few evening I finally tackle the task to finish up my first Necroknight unit of 4... why 4, well why not!

I am working on a second unit.. because they rule on the battlefield. But my first unit being fairly GW-fan-boy-I-want-the-same-than-in-the-book, I wanted a different feel to them. On the other hand I am lazy...

Moreover I did not want to completely close the door to the Stalkers. So I literally built Knight out of the kit and no snake surfers II ( the return of the strike back). Here you go, let me know what you think.

As you can see I magnetize them (wait to see my sphinxes... oh well that one came out wrong... i meant my necrosphinxes/warsphinxes). This way I can still field Stalkers for EBTS build. Just cut one protuberant spine bit of the spine of the stalkers to sit the knight comfortably.

I believe the next tourny will be in April and is 2500pts. ( updates to come ) I'll try and remember my camera this time!Joseph Urbanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17238194792666986776noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3192073208268903796.post-43388232336489316442012-01-23T23:10:00.000-08:002012-01-23T23:10:17.597-08:00All hail the Horned Rat, who heralds the tide of inevitable doom.So winter has finally bared its teeth, and what better time to sit inside and work on your army all day?
With my Beastmen in a surprisingly advanced stage of completeness, I've decided to switch gears a bit and bring my chittering Skaven horde out for blood and conquest. I've only played the army twice and both times with only a tentative grasp on the rules. Now that I have a good number of games under my belt I'm looking forward to giving them another try.
This is a picture of what I'm working with (or without, respectively.)

I'm planting my stake firmly at the 2,000 point level. Any more than that and the sheer weight of unpainted rat-shaped plastic threatens to crush my soul into jelly. The core section of my Beastmen army took years to paint, I'd like these guys to get fancied up much quicker.

My list is Ektrik/Skryre themed. I can't resist all of that slipshod, volatile, arcane machinery that melts friend and foe alike. I want something dramatically different from my Beasts; Lots of shooting/ranged attacks, an army that lends itself to playing a bit more defensively, with a hearty smattering of variety within the ranks. I'm looking forward to seeing whether this fits the bill. Some of these units aren't the most optimal, at least if you put any stock in widespread internet opinion, which I don't. Fun is the whole of the law. I play Beastmen, what do I care about effectiveness? :D

My self-imposed standards for this army are pretty simple:
- No slave spam. While I know that even smaller clans would undoubtedly have thousands of thralls hanging around I just can't do it. They are awesome, I understand this, but I don't want to buy them, paint them, or be disowned by my friends.
- Lots of weapon teams
- Only rely on small support units of rival Clan origin (ie Rat Ogres, Plague dooders, etc.)
- Three dedicated Warlock Engineers...eventually. I'd love to take Ikit Claw as a stand-in for a generic greater engineer but my group (including myself) generally frowns upon any special character inclusion.

Here's my rough rough draft list:

Skizzurk Beardburner, Warlord
- Talisman of Preservation, Crown of Command, Dragonhelm, Shield and Halberd.
Admittedly a bit on the boring side...but he's got the survivability and the supportyness* I'll need.
Skizzurk's Swarmkin, 24 Stormvermin
- Full Command, Grand Banner of Clan Superiority
- Ratling Gun
Smaller than I'd like, but with the Crown and the banner they should fare pretty well. Hopefully the gun will whittle away at the opposition a bit, too.
Grutscuttle the Pious, Warlock Engineer
- Level 2 Wizard
- Foul Pendant
- Warp-Energy Condenser
- Warplock Pistol
Fries anything that moves, hopefully. Should probably have a Dispel Scroll, but I'm 100% smitten with this build.
30 Clanrats
- FC, Shields
- Warpfire Thrower
Euronymouse, Chieftain
- BSB, Charmed Shield, Dragonbane Gem.
Just need those rerolls.
29 Clanrats
- FC, Shields
- Warpfire Thrower
Standard fare. They're a bit small on their own, but I figure I can combine them for a more serious tarpit if need be. The Warpfire Throwers are both fluffy and necessary to keep me on somewhat even footing.
The Target Practice, 41 Slaves
- Musician, Shields
Outfitting my cannon fodder with shields may be a bad idea, but A) they need to hang around as long as possible and B) the models are obviously equipped with them already.
2 Rat Ogres, 1 Packmaster
- Master-bred Rat Ogre
Little flanking unit to give a pack of Clanrats/Slaves more oomph.
Thrizzik Splatt, Warlock Engineer
- Level 1 Wizard
- Warlock Optics
- Warpmusket
- Doomrocket
Hangs out with the skirmishers and blasts away.
9 Poisoned Wind Globadiers
- Bombardier w/ Death Globe
- Poisoned Wind Mortar
4 Warplock Jezzails
- Sharpshooter
Warp Lightning Cannon
Doomwheel

Right now I'm painting a few pieces of the army at a time to a basic level. The weather hasn't been primer-friendly (yesterday being the exception! Curse you daytime work shift...) of late so my infantry has to wait. My Doomwheel, Rat Ogres, and Warp Lightning Cannon are all in various stages of paintedness, and I'm pretty happy with the results thus far. I'm experimenting a bit more with wet blending, though I don't think these pictures are particularly representative of that process.

Not the most exciting picture, but such a cool model. I was a total, utter moron for not painting it BEFORE I assembled it, though. Ugh. Those interior bits are going to be brutal.

It looks a bit clumsy but having the dual-purpose magnetization will be great in the long run.

Bad picture of the army sigil and banner.

With Da Roosta painting up all of that awesome terrain at light speed and Joe's new Vampire Counts (Holy poops those Vargheists look amazing ranked up!) I've got a lot of inspiration to keep plugging away at this. Hopefully I can keep up!

I'll post up the finished character models and some riveting WIP pics in a day or two.

Overall it is great kit: very easy to assemble (roughly an hour if you clean up) and few gaps (honestly all of them could go for natural weakness of the building because they appear in between bricks).

So big fatty full of paints thumbs up GW!

They are few down sides which are not negative for all of us btw. There is an insane amount of details and hidden bits. I took me over 20 hours for the paint job, but half of it was because of a begginer mistake I will develop later on. I have to admit few of them are ill placed inside the building. Some are hard to reach once assembled (inside of the wooden windows and the chaos gateways if you want to give them the attention they would deserve). I reckon mine would need 2 extra hour for polishing details ( some highlights on details such as book, sand timer, blood tracks) but I am satisfied as it is and i may get back on it in few month but for now I want to play with it!

So here is the overall result.
Some of you may notice the bottom floor bricks pattern seem snot to match.. well it is because it is not! I stupidly started to paint this one on its own mixing color and not taking not and i came back on the model 6 months later realizing what a m****n I can be!

So i started to paint all the bricks and just added some extra drybrushes on the bottom floor to blend it all together: I am half satisfied. Ideally you shall restart but ... yeah I have other stuff to paint as well! Contact me if you want the details about colors I used.

Her you can see floor by floor and you can appreciate GW effort to make this kit a little piece of awesomeness.

The main architectural oddity I found was the stone stairs at the second floor leaning on a half rotten wood floor... but hey there is a chaos gateway few inches away so what s really odd in there?

The top and bottom floor are astounding as a whole but my favorite details the two following one:
the pillars

and the winged death portrait: you have two of these available, i tried one in stone and one in metal.. metal is way nicer... I am not big on weathered copper so I went for an ageing gold for the observatory dome.

I do really encourage anybody that invest in this building to get that White Dwarf. You will realize though that you can go a step further to enrich color here and there but the techniques and the logic are the same as the article explain you. I don't have airbrush so i used big flat cheap brush and i dry brushed with big rond shaped cheap brush. I found a lot of 24 brushes for 10 bucks at Michael's perfect for these purposes.

I added some red here and there. I added white stone for the statues and signs. I lighten the big skull to pop it out, bleach bone did the trick.

I used mix of delving mud and green wash to weather the building, kind of muddy juice leaking from the recesses and gutters. I added some wood glue sometime because the washes fluidity does not hold well against gravity sometimes, in that case I added black ink to compensate the glue. The glue dry translucent but still enlight the mix. I added also bird gifts.

Overall I pretty much enjoy the process. Most likely will be something in between. Mostly because when i start painting I did not stop in between step to take picture at each step.

Let s start by the end the take home message:
1. liquid green stuff is awesome for building gap as it looks like mortar at the end.
2. Inks are amazing at creating an ambiance with your building. Honestly between dry brush and ink are all you need for this building.
3. Mickael's is your friend for cheap brushes and extra bits.

Ok so for today let s start with the assembling and the gap filling.

At the opening of the box I was pleasantly surprise with the cut and the sprue. Almost no cleaning and the guide is clear at a noticeable exception.... the ****ing side observatory...which by the way may be a tower if you so decide (I will do walls with them I said before).

So here was teh funny bit to do with very little gap to be fair and all of them filled quickly with liquid GS ...

AT the end I went for the observatory (I did not attached the done so I can place model over there) and I did but minor tweaks. The major one is that I shorten the wooden deck to position a portion of it at the facing door to allow positioning of single model in a neat spot.

DO NOT use the glue accelerator to build this. Because you need long strech of glue or big amount it tends to solidify in shape of worm or bubble due to surface tension by the time you press both parts and then you are screwed!

My only practical tip here is for the observatory tower:
you have 2 type (A & B)of walls and 4 walls in total. Assemble A+B using the octagonal base as platform to give you the right angle in between A and B, Do this twice and then only assemble teh two A+B blocks still using the octagonal base to stabilize when you press them against each other. Keep in mind that the deck must end close to a door (usually the most right side of the octagon)

Few numbers:

-4 hours in total
in details:30 min cleaning and cutting, 2 hours maing building, 1 hour obsrevatory an d30 min minor tweaks.

-1/4 of liquid Green Stuff

Cheerios BambinosAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13538642761090767377noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3192073208268903796.post-70243036584854417442011-12-15T11:19:00.000-08:002011-12-15T11:20:07.396-08:00Slan
